27.Jun.2008 Entrecard Bans "powerdropping" pages

There have been a lot of changes going on at Entrecard recently, the latest being the ban of powerdropping pages and possible penalization for dropping on these pages. Now, I understand that to get in to entrecard in the first place, you’ve got to pass certain “quality checks” which are apparently fairly lax, as some truly spammy, non-updating blogs have been let in. So it makes sense that if your blog has to pass a certain quality test, then you shouldn’t be allowed to move your card to a page with almost no content, which probably wouldn’t pass the quality test.

My problem with this move is that they are on a slippery slope- first they limit the number of drops that you can do in a day, now they’ve banned powerdropping… what’s next? Are they going to limit the number of drops you can do in an hour or minute? I suppose the next logical step would be to force bloggers to move their entrecard below the fold so that visitors are forced to scroll down in order to drop a card.

This is just my two cents here, but entrecard seems to be tightening the noose. Next I suppose they are going to stop letting people sell their entrecards. Maybe I shouldn’t be giving them ideas.

First off, there has always been a limit on the number of drops one person can leave — after all the intention of this site is to be a SOCIAL one — it’s impossible to BE social if you spend all your time hopping from one site to the next and never reading what anyone wrote.

There is also a limit how many drops you can do in a time period — I’m not sure what it is, but it’s in place to prevent those who created scripts from dropping cards using a script. That has been tweaked a lot over the past months as it seems to swing between being to lax and too stringent, but if you’re truly not gaming the system, you’re OK.

I don’t think they will ever stop you from selling or giving away your credits and are even working on an exchange program so you can market them more effectively than Ebay or through the forums offers currently.

And why are you complaining about the more stringent criteria for EntreCard members? Don’t you want to be part of a quality group of people? People who are passionate about blogging and who take the time to write original, interesting and relevant posts? Or are these complaints stemming from the your having to take down one of the pages that you were notified of? Is it because you only want to game the system? Don’t read any of the blogs you drop on because you’re only interested in getting those EC’s? Could that be what it is??

Holy whimsical finger pointing accusations, Batman!

    Answering your questions, in order:

    1) And why are you complaining about the more stringent criteria for EntreCard members?

I’m not complaining about the changes themselves. I never said I disliked the changes, only the direction that these changes seem to be heading.

2,3)Don’t you want to be part of a quality group of people? People who are passionate about blogging and who take the time to write original, interesting and relevant posts?

Who doesn’t? If you’d visited the link in my post, you would have found a seriously pathetic blog with only one very short, misspelled entry- proof of just how bad a blog can be while still getting into entrecard.

I think you misunderstood the part of my rant about the “stringent” criteria for entrecard members- I was pointing out that they are apparently not stringent enough.

4,5)Or are these complaints stemming from the your having to take down one of the pages that you were notified of?Is it because you only want to game the system?

Wow… that really came out of left field. I don’t know where you are getting these wild-eyed accusations from, but the answer is no.

6)Don’t read any of the blogs you drop on because you’re only interested in getting those EC’s? Could that be what it is??

You make it sound like I’m fiending for crack here… maybe you should try decaf.

If I wasn’t reading the blogs, how could I point out a crappy one in my post? I skim the first few lines, and if it is interesting I will read it all. There are even a few blogs that I read every time they update, no matter what.

Unfortunately, I can’t be interested in everything under the sun, and there are some seriously crappy blogs in the system. There’s one where the “author” literally copies his spam emails into his blog. I even found one that was scraping content from one of my blogs- and he had the nerve to drop his entrecard on it!
